Naramachi, Nara · 奈良

The old town south of Sarusawa pond: narrow streets of lattice-fronted machiya, now holding craft shops, small museums, coffee and a few good restaurants.

Why it’s worth it

Almost every visitor stays north with the deer. Naramachi is ten minutes away, half as busy, and where you should eat lunch.
