Tōdai-ji
東大寺
Nara Park, Nara · 奈良
The Daibutsuden, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world even at two-thirds of its original width, housing a 15-metre bronze Buddha cast in 752.
Why it’s worth it
A pillar at the back has a hole the size of the Buddha’s nostril; squeezing through it is said to grant enlightenment. Children manage it easily, adults less so.
