Tōfuku-ji
東福寺
Higashiyama, Kyoto · 京都
A large Zen temple whose Tsūtenkyō bridge crosses a ravine packed with maples, and whose modern abbot’s garden lays moss out in a chequerboard grid.
Why it’s worth it
In late November the bridge is one-way and timed. The chequerboard moss garden by Mirei Shigemori is worth the entry on any day of the year.
